Someone sends me to a "government tourist office"
Don't go in. Real tourist information does not hunt for people on the street.
A helpful stranger, a rickshaw driver or a person with a lanyard says the official tourist office is nearby, or the only way to get a ticket, a car or a hotel. The office has an official-sounding name but it is a private agency selling tours and transfers at high prices.
Say this
“No thanks. I've already booked.”
In Hindi: Nahin chahiye, shukriya. Mera sab book hai.
Do this
- Don't follow, even if it is "just two minutes".
- Check the name and address yourself on a map. A private agency can use official-sounding words like "Government" or "Approved" in its name.
- For real help, call the Ministry of Tourism helpline on 1363. It is free, runs day and night and covers English plus 11 other languages.
- Book tours and cars through your hotel or an app you chose, not on the street.
Use this instead
The 1363 helpline, your hotel desk, or a licensed guide booked in advance.
Already paid or handed something over?
Ask for a written receipt, take a photo of the shop front, and report to 1363 or the police on 112. Dispute card or UPI payments with your bank the same day.
