Monument tickets cost more for foreigners
Normal. The posted foreigner rate is the real price at the counter.
India's protected monuments publish separate rates for Indian and foreign visitors. The Taj Mahal's own ticketing page, for example, lists Indian, foreigner and regional-neighbour columns side by side. It feels unfair to many visitors, but it is the official rate, not a trick.
Say this
“One foreigner ticket, please.”
Do this
- Buy at the ticket counter or the official booking page for that monument.
- Don't buy from someone outside who says they have a discount, a "skip the line" ticket or a guide package.
- Check that the price board at the counter matches what you were charged.
When it is not normal
A person outside the gate who offers a cheaper ticket, or asks for far more than the board, is not the official counter.
Use this instead
The official counter or booking page, and a licensed guide if you want one.

Traveller posts are individual accounts, not a count. This is guidance, not legal advice or a guarantee. When in doubt, don't pay and check with your hotel.
