2 Days in Delhi Itinerary: First-Timer's Ideal Weekend
Perfect 2-day Delhi plan: Day 1 Old + Central Delhi, Day 2 South Delhi forts and tombs. Metro routes, timings, tickets, and food stops.
Two days is Delhi's sweet spot for a first visit. Day one earns Old and Central Delhi while your energy is high; day two spends it slowly in South Delhi where the monuments are spaced by gardens, not traffic. You leave having seen both Delhis without feeling you sprinted.
This builds on the 1-day itinerary and sets up the 3-day itinerary. For longer stays, see 4–5 days.
Day 1: Old Delhi + Central Delhi (The Intensity Day)#
07:00–10:30 Old Delhi — early or not at all#
Metro: Chandni Chowk (Yellow Line). Start at Jama Masjid before 7:30 AM for empty courtyard photos, then walk Chandni Chowk. Pick one deep lane, not three:
- Khari Baoli spice market (scent, color, cheap souvenirs)
- Paranthe Wali Gali (the fried-parantha ritual — one is enough)
- Chawri Bazaar paper and wedding markets if chaos interests you
Breakfast: Lotan Chole Kulche or Kuremal Kulfi after 10 AM — ₹100–180. This is the short version of the Old Delhi food walk.
10:45–12:30 Red Fort#
Walk 800m from Chandni Chowk. Red Fort is closed Mondays — if today is Monday, swap in Agrasen ki Baoli now and move Red Fort to Day 2 morning before Humayun's Tomb. Tickets: ₹35 / ₹500 at ASI counter or online.
Stay 60–75 minutes. The museum inside Lahori Gate is worth 15 minutes; the full palace interior can wait if you are time-pressed.
12:45–14:00 Central Delhi Breathing Room#
Auto or metro to India Gate + Kartavya Path. No ticket, 30 minutes is right. Add Agrasen ki Baoli if you didn't earlier — the stepwell is free and shaded. Lunch in Connaught Place (Rajdhani Thali, Wenger's, or any café from the work-café list).
14:30–16:30 Humayun's Tomb#
Metro to JLN Stadium + auto. The Taj Mahal's prototype deserves 90 unrushed minutes. Gardens, not just the dome, are the point — carry water. Ticket ₹40 / ₹600.
17:00–18:30 Lodhi Garden Sunset#
Free, 10 minutes from Humayun's by auto. Tombs inside a park where Delhi jogs and picnics. In winter this is golden-hour; in summer keep it short.
Evening: dinner at Nizamuddin (Karim's) or CP. Metro home via Jor Bagh.
Day 2: South Delhi — Tombs, Minars, and Gardens#
This is the day most one-day tourists miss, and the reason two days feels complete.
08:00–10:30 Qutub Minar + Mehrauli#
Metro: Qutub Minar (Yellow) + 8-min auto. Qutub Minar needs 60–75 minutes (₹35 / ₹550). The iron pillar and the unfinished Alai Minar are inside the same complex — don't queue twice.
Walk or auto 1.5 km to Mehrauli Archaeological Park (free, 200 acres). Two or three tombs and the stepwell Rajon ki Baoli are enough — this park is huge, you are sampling, not surveying. The 3-day plan often pairs these two; it works because they are adjacent.
11:00–13:00 Hauz Khas + Deer Park#
Auto 15 minutes. Hauz Khas Complex (medieval reservoir + mosque) is ₹25, adjacent Deer Park is free. Eat in the village — cafés overlooking the lake beat any mall food court. This is your lunch-and-linger block.
13:30–15:30 Choice Block: Museums or Temples#
Pick one; don't do both:
| If you like | Go to | Note |
|---|---|---|
| History | National Museum, Janpath | 2 hrs, closed Mondays |
| Textiles | National Crafts Museum + Dilli Haat | Shop + museum combo |
| Modern devotion | Lotus Temple (free, closed Mondays) or Akshardham (closed Mondays, 3 hrs min) | Akshardham needs half-day, so only if dedicated |
16:00–18:00 Sundown Option A: Sunder Nursery OR Option B: Old Delhi Return#
- Sunder Nursery (10 min from Humayun's, ₹50) — 90 acres of restored Mughal gardens, best light at 5 PM, café inside. Locals prefer it to Lodhi Garden now.
- Old Delhi return — if Day 1 felt rushed, go back after 5 PM when crowds thin and food stalls peak.
Evening: Aerocity rooftop or Connaught Place for last-night shopping (Janpath for bargaining, Dilli Haat for fixed prices — see market comparison).
“We have 2 days in Delhi, staying at Hauz Khas, arriving Saturday morning. Reorder this 2-day itinerary to minimize metro rides from our hotel.”
Logistics That Save Hours#
- Alternate strong/soft halves: Old Delhi (intense) → Central (easy) → Humayun's (focused). Don't stack Red Fort + Jama Masjid + Qutub Minar in one morning.
- Book nothing Monday AM: Red Fort, Lotus Temple, National Museum closed — check closed days before locking dates.
- Metro math: Tourist card at New Delhi station pays back by day two if you ride 4+ times daily — see metro tickets & rules and lines guide.
- AQI check nightly in winter — reshuffle outdoor/indoor blocks using our pollution guide.
- Flying in for the weekend? Saturday 6 AM out and Sunday 9 PM back is usually cheapest, and Sunday-night CP hotels often drop versus Friday — one base for both nights beats shifting.
FAQ#
Is 2 days enough for Delhi? For a first pass, yes. You see the Mughal core (Red Fort, Humayun's Tomb, Jama Masjid) + Lutyens' Delhi + Qutub Minar without a day trip. Add a third day if you want museums or a food deep-dive.
Should I do Agra/Taj Mahal on day 2? Not on a 2-day Delhi trip — you lose Delhi itself. Taj needs a dedicated day; see 4–5 day itinerary for the honest Agra day-trip math.
Can I do this by auto/Uber only, no metro? You can, but 2-day metro saves ~3 hours of traffic. Old + Central Delhi are Yellow Line; South Delhi is Yellow Violet overlap — metro is faster 9 AM–8 PM.
Where should I stay for this plan? Central Delhi (Karol Bagh, Connaught Place) for Day 1 proximity, or South Delhi (Hauz Khas, Saket) for Day 2 proximity — see best area to stay.
What if it rains? Swap Qutub Minar morning for an indoor museum and push Qutub to afternoon —paths flood. Monsoon light at Humayun's Tomb is spectacular; see monsoon guide.
