Delhi Auto Fares: How Much to Pay and Avoid Overpaying
Delhi autos rarely run the meter for tourists. Official per-km rate, what fixed fares to offer, and when to take Ola Auto or metro instead.
Delhi autos run on negotiation, not meters. The official meter rate exists — ₹25 for the first 1.5 km, then ₹9.50 per km, plus 25% at night — but street drivers rarely switch it on for tourists. Expect to either book Ola Auto in-app with a locked price or agree a fixed fare before sitting down.
As a rule of thumb in daylight: short lane hops ₹50–80, 3 km around ₹80–120, 5 km around ₹120–180, 8–10 km around ₹180–250. App prices usually land at the lower end of each band.

What an auto should cost#

These are daytime bands. Night (11 PM–5 AM) officially adds 25%, and peak-hour traffic pushes street quotes up while app fares surge. If a street quote is double the app estimate, walk to the next auto — the third or fourth usually settles near the band off-peak.
Official extras few tourists know: waiting is charged per minute in traffic, and luggage beyond a small bag carries a small per-piece charge. In practice these get folded into the negotiated total.
How to book without overpaying#
Ola Auto for the first two days. The price locks before booking, you verify the driver and plate, share the ride, and pay by UPI or cash with no negotiation. It removes the entire haggling layer while you learn the city's distances.
Street auto when you must. Name the destination with a number, not a question: "Outer Circle, fixed ₹100, chalogey?" Offering first anchors the negotiation lower than asking "how much?" If the driver says "meter" without switching it on, treat it as a no and move on. Two refusals is normal; after that book the app rather than burning twenty minutes.

When not to take an auto#
- 8+ km in evening peak (5–8 PM). The metro is often three times faster — check Delhi traffic hours to avoid.
- After 11 PM with luggage. Take a cab with a locked price and verified plate.

Do Delhi autos use the meter? Rarely for tourists. Agree a fixed fare or use Ola Auto.
