6–10 Hour Layover in Delhi: What to Do Without Missing Flight — Delhi guide

On a 6–10 hour layover at Delhi Airport, you have two honest options: stay airside and rest, or do one quick city sortie — not both, not two sights. Traffic and security re-entry eat hours, so the plan must be timed backward from boarding, not forward from landing.

For longer, see the 12–24 hour layover guide. For terminal swaps, terminal transfer; for bags, luggage storage.

First: Are You Allowed Out?#

  • Single PNR (airline-checked connection): stay airside without Indian visa — don't exit if layover <6h
  • Two tickets / self-transfer / want to see city: you must clear immigration — need Indian e-visa/visa. No visa = airside only
  • Domestic→domestic: free to exit and re-enter

The Math That Decides Everything#

Count from boarding gate closure (30–45 min before departure), not departure time.

Gate closes: departure -45 min
Security re-entry: -30 min (domestic) / -45 min (international)
Courier back: -40 min city→airport by cab off-peak / -25 min by metro
Exit + store bags: -30 min (if you dump luggage)
→ Usable city time = layover - 2.5 to 3 hours
  • 6-hour gap → ~3 hours city time → one sight Max, near metro line
  • **8-hour gap → ~4.5 hours city → one sight + quick meal
  • **10-hour gap → ~6.5 hours → one sight + meal + garden/café

If usable time <2.5 hours, stay airside — lounge, food, sleep. Threads on r/travel for Delhi layover advice where travelers attempted two sights on 6h and missed flights are consistent: one sight is the ceiling.

Plan A: Stay Airside (Best for <7 Hours or Midnight–Morning)#

T3 airside has 24h food court, paid lounges (Encalm/Plaza Premium — ₹2,500–4,000 for 3–6h with pods/showers), quiet gates 28–30 for sleep, and airside shopping. Don't exit to store luggage — keep bags.

If you must exit for bags/visa, use how early to reach windows to re-enter (2h domestic / 3h international before entry gate).

After 11:30 PM the metro has stopped, so road is the only option: the prepaid taxi counter inside arrivals (fixed slip, no haggle) or an app cab from the signposted arrivals pickup bay — never the departures kerb. Full scripts in the late-night arrival guide.

Plan B: One Quick City Sortie (7–10 Hours, Daytime)#

If landing at T3:#

7-hour example (arrive 10:00, depart 17:00):

10:00 Land, clear immigration if needed
10:30 Drop bags at T3 cloakroom (landside) — 15 min queue
11:00 Airport Express T3 → New Delhi (20 min) → Yellow to Central Secretariat (1 stop) → auto to India Gate
11:45 India Gate + Kartavya Path (45 min, free, outdoors — good photo, low queue)
12:30 Connaught Place quick thali at Rajdhani (30 min)
13:15 Auto → New Delhi station → Airport Express → T3
14:00 Collect bags, re-clear security
14:45 Airside, gate

8–10 hour variant: swap India Gate for Humayun's Tomb (replace CP lunch with tomb — 75 min) OR Old Delhi lanes (Chandni Chowk walk — see food walk) if you want chaos. Pick one, not both — distances punish pairing.

Mirrored reports from r/delhi 8-hour layover travelers who did exactly this and returned with buffer.

If landing at T1:#

T1 has no direct metro. Take the free inter-terminal shuttle to T3 (20–35 minutes with traffic), then the Airport Express as above — or an auto to Aerocity metro and the Orange line from there. The shuttle runs thin around 5 AM, when a direct app cab is often faster than waiting. On 6–8 hours from T1, add 30 minutes each way versus T3; the safer bet is an Aerocity walk plus hotel café rather than the full city run. If you land T1 and connect from T3, stay airside and use the shuttle rather than exiting.

If starting from New Delhi railway station (NDLS), not the airport:#

The same spine works in reverse — New Delhi metro is on the Yellow and Airport Express lines, so Chandni Chowk is minutes away and CP–India Gate–Humayun's follows the same order. Skip the airport buffer math and keep the per-sight buffers below.

8–10 Hours in the City: Old Delhi or South Delhi — Pick One Side#

With a full 8–10 hour city window (hotel-based, not a flight layover), cluster by metro line, not map distance. A single untimed auto across central Delhi can eat 55 minutes at 9 AM.

Time you haveRealistic cluster
4 hoursOne cluster only: Old Delhi OR New Delhi — metro in, 2 sights, metro out
6–8 hoursOld Delhi spine + one New Delhi monument (Chandni Chowk → Jama Masjid → India Gate)
10 hoursOld Delhi morning + South Delhi afternoon (Red Fort → Humayun's Tomb → Lodhi Garden sunset)

A workable 10-hour spine: Red Fort at 8:30 sharp (lanes just opening, clean light) → Jama Masjid courtyard → Yellow Line to Central Secretariat → India Gate and Kartavya Path → Humayun's Tomb on an ASI e-ticket (buy at asi.payumoney.com the night before) → Khan Market lunch with AC and toilets → Lodhi Garden or Sunder Nursery for the 4:30–6 PM light → metro back. Keep a 30-minute buffer per sight for exit queues, security and the 10-minute walks from metro exits.

What to skip without regret: Akshardham needs 3 hours with security and no phones inside; Qutub needs 70–90 minutes plus the 1.2 km walk from the station. Pick one south anchor per half-day — drop Qutub before Humayun's if you run late, and never cut lunch and buffer to squeeze a sight.

What NOT to Do on 6–10 Hours#

  • Don't do Agra/Taj — see 4–5 day plan for why Agra needs a day trip, not a layover
  • Don't do Qutub Minar — 12 km south adds 90 min round-trip traffic
  • Don't take auto-rickshaw airport→city — metro avoids peak traffic 5–8 PM which turns 40 min cab into 90 min

“Land Delhi T3 at 11 AM, depart 7 PM same ticket, Indian e-visa. Can I do India Gate on this 8-hour layover and what exact timing to be back?”

Ask in 1-ClickInstant answer with local routes & tips

FAQ#

Can I leave Delhi Airport on a layover? Yes if you have a visa/e-visa and the layover gap allows 2.5–3 hours buffer for return. Domestic passengers can always exit.

Is 6 hours enough to see the Red Fort? Too tight — Red Fort needs 60–90 min plus 40 min each way from T3 = too much transit for the window. India Gate/Kartavya Path is the only safe 6-hour outdoor sight.

Where to store luggage on a short layover? T3 arrivals cloakroom landside — see storage guide. If layover <7h, skip storing — keep bags airside.

Can I use a lounge on a layover? Yes — T3 airside Encalm/Plaza Premium sells 3–6 hour access with shower/pods — useful for midnight to morning gaps.

DigiYatra on a layover? Domestic only — helps entry and security re-entry fast-lane at T3. Immigration queue is manual.
