Can You Take Your Phone to the US Embassy in Delhi?

No. You cannot take your phone inside the US Embassy in New Delhi at Shantipath, Chanakyapuri — not switched off, not in your pocket, not in a bag you hand over at the gate.
The Embassy's security notice lists battery-operated and electronic devices as prohibited, and states plainly that there is no facility to store prohibited items. Leave your phone, smartwatch and other electronics at the hotel and carry only your visa papers in a slim transparent folder.

What is prohibited at the gate#
From the official Embassy security notice:
- Mobile phones, smartwatches, Bluetooth devices, pagers
- Laptops, tablets, cameras, audio/video players, flash drives, portable music players
- Large shoulder bags, backpacks, briefcases, suitcases — only small hand-carried folders with application papers are permitted
- Food and drink, cosmetics including spray perfume, sealed envelopes or packages
- Cigarettes, lighters, matchboxes, sharp objects, weapons or weapon-like items
- Long umbrellas over 40 cm when closed
Security staff can refuse anything else at their discretion. If you argue at the gate, you lose your slot time — the queue does not wait.
Where to keep your phone during the interview#
The practical answer is your hotel room or with a companion who stays outside the security perimeter. Private locker shops near the Embassy charge a small fee, but they are unofficial, queues form at peak hours, and leaving a phone with a stranger before an interview adds stress you do not need.
Simplest plan for an 8 AM slot:
- Leave phone, smartwatch, power bank and laptop at the hotel. Carry the hotel's card with the address.
- Take a printed copy of your appointment letter, DS-160 confirmation and interview support documents in a transparent folder.
- Carry enough cash or a single card for the auto or cab back — no phone means no UPI or app cab on the spot. Fix your return transport with the driver or hotel before you enter.
- Note down two numbers on paper: your hotel and one family contact.
Anyone accompanying you for mobility or medical help must be cleared in advance through the Embassy's process — a companion cannot simply hold your phone inside the compound.
What to carry instead#
- Current passport plus old passports with prior US visas
- DS-160 confirmation page with a clean, unfold barcode
- Appointment letter printout
- Interview support papers for your visa class (employment letter, invitation, financials — per your checklist)
- One 50×50 mm US-spec photo as backup
- Reading glasses and essential medication if needed
Black-and-white printouts are accepted. Do not staple across barcodes or photos.
Reaching the Embassy without a phone#
The Embassy is at Shantipath, Chanakyapuri. Nearest metro is Jor Bagh on the Yellow Line, then a 10-minute auto ride. Save or print the route the night before, since you will not have maps at the gate.

Quick answers#
Can I keep the phone in my car outside? Cars stop outside the security cordon and you walk in from there, so the phone stays as exposed as leaving it with a shop. Hotel is safer.
Does the VAC have the same rule? No. The Delhi VAC permits a phone on silent with photography prohibited, but bans laptops and large bags. Embassy day is stricter — do not mix the two.
Are smartwatches allowed? No. Anything battery-operated or Bluetooth counts as an electronic device.
